Alec Sims
guitar
A famous local sultry siren of song has summed Alec up in one simple phrase: "Alec rocks. What can I say". We could end there, but we'll continue, just for the fun of it-- Alec has performed with numerous bands throughout the Colorado area since 1990. He has appeared with such noteworthy acts as Girls On Top!, Loaded Dice, Paul Soderman and The BBC, Coy Kindred, Mr. Man, Funkopolis, Ethnic Background, Swindle, Bobby Dixon, Jason Hollar's Big Black Cadillac, Jumping At Shadows, and last, but not least, Chrome Rider.
In another simultaneous parallel lifetime, when not playing loud guitar in various music venues, Alec works with Jonathan Goldman's Healing Sounds Seminars teaching the therapeutic and transformative uses of sound, music, and voice. Nada Brahma... His overtone singing is featured on several of Jonathan's award-winning recordings, including The Lost Chord, Ultimate Om, Medicine Buddha, Chakra Chants 2, ChakraDance, and The Divine Name.
When not involved with music and Sound Work, Alec can be found reading esoteric books at local coffee shops. He's a gently cynical, but sensitive, New Age guy. Got a problem with that? Let's take it outside! Om Shanti...
Kyle Comerford
drums, backup vocals
Kyle's drumming has been described as "Honey Nut Cheerios with a little mornin' whiskey." Sweet and powerful and a little bit dirty, Kyle's 30 years of drumming across multiple decades and continents - including playing for the US troops in five countries - bring STAR one step closer to immortality.
Among bands too countless to... um... count, Kyle has been in the Sally Taylor Band, the Reejers (a collection of REJects and losERS from other bands), Loaded Dice, and the Jonny Mogambo Band.
Kyle has also shared the stage with James Taylor, Los Lobos, Jimmy Buffet, Edwin McCain, Jefferson Starship, The Violent Femmes, Everclear, Junior Walker, Greg Khin, John Caffery (Beaver Brown Band), and Guster.
Over the years, Kyle has tamed down his 37-piece Neil-Pert-inspired drum set to a manageable 4-piece... but, close your eyes, and it still sounds like two people are playing!
Kyle is proud to have been playing mullet-free since 1989.
Other Fun Kyle Facts:
- Appeared on CNN in NYC, and Quentin Tarantino roadied his gear afterward
- Shared a pumpernickel bagel with James Taylor at his house in Massachusetts
- Has played at all of the "Houses of Blues" except the one in Las Vegas
- Backed up Carly Simon at the Bottom Line in NYC
- Played VanHalen's Cabo Wabo Cantina in Mexico
Otis Lande
bass
Otis is a rare breed: a solid jazz player with a funky-ass bass slap! When not saving the world with S.T.A.R, Otis plays with Rogue Sound and Smack Thompson. Otis has also played with Boulder's own Rose Hill Drive, and other frequent collaborators include Ryan Madson, Daniel Lucio, Trevor Hill, and noted jazz pianist, drummer and composer Art Lande. He enjoys playing jazz, rock, funk, brazilian, afro-cuban, reggae, free improvisation, psychadelic rock, and bluegrass. Anything, really, except Tibetan singing bowl music, which unfortunately kinda bothers Alec...
In Spring 2007, Otis graduated from the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles with a BFA in Jazz Bass Performance. While at CalArts he also had the benefit of studying with legendary bassist Alphonso Johnson, of Weather Report fame.
His primary influences have been Bass gurus Les Claypool of Primus and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Also, Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorius, John Entwistle, John-Paul Jones, Paul McCartney, Mike Gordon, Jack Bruce, Phil Lesh, Charles Mingus, Ray Brown, Rufus Reed, and many others have been inspirational.
